Miniature Golden Retriever – A Smaller Version of a Great Dog

While many people love the friendliness and look of Golden Retrievers, some don’t have the room for a larger dog. Others may not have the energy to deal with a larger dog either. In this case, the Miniature Golden Retriever may be an option to consider. The miniature or teacup mixes are a whole lot smaller, which many people are sure to appreciate. However, it’s important that you realize that this is not going to be a purebred Golden. It takes a mixture to come up with these mini Golden Retriever sizes. Purebred options usually end up being about 23-24 inches high when it comes to the males. You’ll find that the teacup options are much smaller than this size.

Some specific requirements have been set for these Miniature Golden Retrievers. They are to be at least 50% Golden Retriever or they cannot be given this name. They can have up to 25% of poodle in them but they have to keep a coat that is straight. They also can have up to 50% total of English Cocker Spaniel or American Cocker Spaniel. To help broaden the gene pool, in the future other spaniels may be allowed as well. The size is specific as well. These dogs should usually be between 14-18 inches in height and about 20-40 pounds in weight. They also are supposed to have all the positive personality traits that comes with a traditional Golden. This includes traits like loyalty, being fun, gentle, family friendly, willing to please, trainable, and playful.

Of course, there are several different varieties and sizes to consider if you are interested in having a Mini Golden Retriever of your own. Goldens and Cocker Spaniels are often bred together to get this teacup size. However, one of the rarer varieties is known as a toy Golden, which is even smaller than the miniature or teacup Golden Retriever mix. Goldendoodles that are miniature are made by mixing a Golden and a poodle. However, the petite goldendoodle is a mix of a Golden, a Cocker Spaniel, and a Miniature Poodle. Often these dogs end up having a curlier coat.

Since these hybrid dogs are difficult to breed, they are usually pretty expensive. However, even if you end up paying a high price, you still won’t be able to be a part of the American Kennel Club, since they are not considered to be a pure breed. If you want a registered dog, this may not be the right option for you. However, if you really want a dog that has all the great traits of the Golden while being a lot smaller, you’ll definitely find that a Miniature Golden Retriever can be a wonderful addition to your family.
